World Cancer Day 2026 Observed at RCHRC with Patient-Centric Initiatives

Ranchi Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (RCHRC) marked World Cancer Day 2026 with a series of meaningful activities focused on patients, their families, and the larger community. In keeping with the global theme “United by Unique,” the day highlighted the belief that while every cancer journey is different, care, compassion, and collective support can make that journey less isolating.

The day began on an energetic note with a flash mob performed by students of Meta-Adventist Nursing College in the OPD waiting area. Through music and movement, the students conveyed a simple yet powerful message—that every cancer is unique and challenging, but with the support of family, caregivers, and the community, patients can reclaim a sense of normalcy and hope.

On this occasion, the Medical Director of RCHRC, Dr Gautam Kumar Sharan, addressed patients and attendees, speaking about the significance of World Cancer Day and this year’s theme. He also sensitised the audience to common cancer symptoms that should not be ignored and emphasised the importance of early detection. During his address, Dr Sharan announced the launch of a dedicated Tracheostomy Clinic at RCHRC, which will function every Monday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, further strengthening specialised supportive care services. He also informed the gathering that laboratory services at the hospital are now available round-the-clock.

The morning activities were followed by a cultural programme supported by Be Different Events, along with snack distribution for patients and their relatives. Around 100 patients and attendants participated in the programme. NGO representatives sang songs, and children performed on dance numbers, creating a warm and uplifting atmosphere aimed at motivating and emotionally supporting patients. A few patients and relatives also shared about their struggles yet showed a never-give-up attitude. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Amitesh Anand, Senior Surgical Oncologist, who acknowledged the efforts of all contributors and volunteers.

In the evening, a symbolic tree plantation drive was organised within the hospital premises. Around 40 saplings were planted by patients and their attendants, with support from doctors and staff members—an act representing resilience, growth, and hope beyond illness.

Alongside these activities, a cancer screening camp was conducted from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. A total of 63 beneficiaries were screened, during which one suspected case of breast cancer was identified and referred for further evaluation. The screening included checks for hypertension and diabetes, oral examination, clinical breast examination, and VIA testing for cervical cancer.

Through these diverse initiatives, RCHRC’s World Cancer Day observance reinforced its commitment to care that goes beyond treatment—care that listens, supports, and stands united with every individual, in their own unique journey.
