The Tata Trusts are committed to supporting the efforts for cancer care in the country. Our endeavour is to improve treatment of cancer, to increase survival rates and, perhaps, one day, find a cure from the disease.
The incidence of cancer in India has grown over the years. With an estimated 1.46 million cases for 2022 alone, this number will only rise in the future.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) projects that one in nine Indians could be affected by the disease in their lifetime. The country’s cancer cases have been projected to grow by 27.7% between 2015 and 2025, according to the national cancer registry maintained by ICMR-National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research (NCDIR) in Bengaluru.
The large majority of people living across India’s diverse social and geographical expanse find it difficult to access timely and quality cancer care. Cancer also adversely affects the lives of patients and their families due to the nature of the disease and presumptions around its management. This stems primarily from a general lack of awareness, and delays in detection which often come from lack of structured health screening programmes, poor access to cancer diagnosis and treatment options, and the high costs associated with it.
There is a strong need for interventions that will adequately address this growing scourge. To address this, Tata Trusts’ Cancer Care Programme has been working to bring quality cancer care to the underserved areas and communities around the country, and also make it affordable. The Ranchi Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (RCHRC) located at Kanke in Ranchi, Jharkhand, is a major step in this direction.
A joint initiative of the Ranchi Cancer Care Foundation (RCCF) and the Tata Cancer Care Foundation (TCCF), this state-of-the-art cancer hospital is supported by Tata Trusts. RCHRC provides a range of cancer treatment services – from diagnosis, treatment and management to palliative and post-surgical care –delivered by teams of experienced and trained medical professionals.

Tata Trusts was set up with a vision to create institutions that make a difference not just in India, but globally. Their mission in cancer care began with the establishment of the Tata Memorial Hospital, India's first cancer care center, in Mumbai in 1941. Since then, the Trusts have played a significant role in changing the way cancer is detected, diagnosed and treated in the country. In 2012, the Trusts established the Tata Medical Centre in Kolkata, which improved access to quality cancer care among people in the eastern and northeastern regions of India.
To bridge the care gap further, the Trusts launched their Cancer Care Programme in 2017. This programme employs a unique distribution model to provide affordable and high-quality cancer treatment to underserved regions of India where patients would otherwise lack access to the care they need. Through the establishment of a network of hospitals, Tata Trusts’ Cancer Care Programme is working towards bringing primary, secondary and tertiary care to cancer patients in every corner of India.
