On October 19, 2024, the Ranchi Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (RCHRC) organised an insightful educational program to commemorate World Hospice and Palliative Care Day. The event was aimed at raising awareness about the importance of palliative care, especially in oncology, and enhancing the integration of compassionate care for patients with serious illnesses.
The programme was graced by the esteemed Guest of Honour, Dr Chandra Kishore Shahi, Director-in-Chief of Health Services, Jharkhand. Dr Shahi shared valuable insights into the National Program for Palliative Care and discussed its integration into the healthcare system of Jharkhand, emphasising the need for accessible and quality palliative care across the state.
The event featured a panel of distinguished speakers, each bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise in their respective fields.
Dr Jayita Deodhar, Professor and Head of the Department of Palliative Medicine at Tata Memorial Hospital, delivered a thought-provoking presentation on the progress made in palliative medicine over the past decade. Her talk highlighted the strides in patient care, pain management, and improving the quality of life for those with serious illnesses.
Prof (Dr) Amool R Singh, Professor and Head of the Department of Clinical Psychology at the Ranchi Institute of Neuro-Psychiatry and Allied Sciences (RINPAS), Kanke, emphasised the critical role of communication in palliative care. His session underscored the need for clear, compassionate conversations between healthcare providers, patients, and families.
Dr Satveer Singh, Consultant Surgical Oncologist at Shri Harikrishan Superspeciality, Hazaribagh, shared insights into compassionate end-of-life care and symptom management to relieve patient suffering.
Dr Manisha, Consultant in Palliative Medicine at RCHRC, delivered an impactful talk on transforming cancer care through the integration of palliative medicine. She also laid the foundation for establishing palliative care services at RCHRC, setting a new benchmark in holistic cancer treatment in the region. Dr Manisha gave an insight into how integration of palliative care in oncology at the time of diagnosis can provide holistic care of patients with their caregivers by addressing physical, psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual pain to reduce their suffering.
The event saw active participation from external attendees, including doctors, nursing students, and faculty members from Shine-Abdur Razaque Ansari Institute of Health Education & Research Centre (Nursing), Amrita College of Nursing, Ranchi, psychology students from RINPAS, and other healthcare professionals. Representatives from Tata Steel Ranchi as well as the Meherbai Tata Memorial Hospital (MTMH), Jamshedpur, as also NGOs such as Marwari Yuva Manch and Rastra Samvardhan Samiti (Bharat Sewashram Sangh), attended the event. The testimonials of the caregivers touched many a chord in the audience. Personnel from Tata Cancer Care Foundation (TCCF), Sri Venkateswara Institute of Cancer Care and Advanced Research (SVICCAR), as well as Civil Surgeons from various regions of Jharkhand also participated virtually.
